Why a written audit checklist matters before any SEO work starts
Most SEO proposals lead with a monthly retainer number and a list of vague deliverables like "on-page optimization" and "link building." Neither tells you whether the agency actually looked at your robots.txt, your JavaScript rendering, your log files, or your GSC coverage report before quoting a price. This checklist exists so you can run a structured pass yourself, or hand it to a vendor and ask them to fill in findings against each line item, before you sign anything. It's ordered the way a technical auditor actually works through a site: access and crawlability first, then indexation, then content and on-page factors, then performance, then off-page and local signals, then measurement. Skipping the order usually means someone jumps straight to keyword suggestions without confirming Google can even crawl the pages properly.
Crawlability and indexation: the foundation layer
Access and robots directives
- Pull robots.txt and check for accidental disallow rules blocking CSS/JS, staging paths left open, or entire subdirectories cut off from crawlers.
- Check meta robots tags and X-Robots-Tag HTTP headers on templates β noindex on paginated or filtered pages is fine, noindex on money pages is a live bug.
- Confirm canonical tags point to the correct self-referencing or consolidated URL, especially on faceted navigation (color/size filters, sort parameters) that can spawn thousands of near-duplicate URLs.
XML sitemaps and Google Search Console coverage
- Verify the sitemap only lists 200-status, indexable, canonical URLs β sitemaps stuffed with redirects or 404s waste crawl budget and signal poor housekeeping.
- Review the GSC Coverage/Indexing report for "Discovered - currently not indexed" and "Crawled - currently not indexed" buckets; a large count here usually points to thin content or duplicate templates, not a crawl problem.
- Check crawl stats (requests per day, average response time, host status) to catch server slowdowns that throttle Googlebot.
Site architecture and internal linking
- Map click depth from the homepage β pages buried more than 3-4 clicks deep get crawled less frequently and rank worse, regardless of content quality.
- Check for orphan pages (present in sitemap or CMS but with zero internal links pointing to them).
- Audit breadcrumb markup and category-to-product/article linking patterns for logical topical clustering.
On-page and content review

- Check render-blocking resources, unused CSS/JS bundle size, and whether critical fonts/images are preloaded.
- Confirm HTTPS is enforced site-wide with no mixed-content warnings, and that redirect chains (HTTPβHTTPSβwwwβfinal URL) are collapsed to a single hop.
- Review mobile usability report in GSC for tap-target and viewport issues, particularly on older template-based sites not built mobile-first.
Backlink profile and off-page signals
- Pull the backlink profile from Search Console plus a third-party tool (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz) and compare β no single tool has complete link index coverage.
- Check for toxic or spammy link patterns (link farms, irrelevant foreign-language directories, PBN footprints) that may warrant a disavow file.
- Assess anchor text distribution for over-optimization (excessive exact-match commercial anchors is a common manual action trigger).
- Benchmark referring domain growth and topical relevance of linking sites against direct competitors targeting the same queries.
Local signals (for businesses with physical locations or service areas)
- Audit Google Business Profile completeness: categories, service areas, hours, attributes, and whether the primary category actually matches the core service.
- Check NAP (name, address, phone) consistency across the website footer, GBP listing, and major directories β mismatches dilute local ranking signals.
- Review review volume, recency, and response rate, plus presence of LocalBusiness schema with correct geo-coordinates on location pages.
- For multi-location businesses, confirm each location has a unique, substantive landing page rather than a templated near-duplicate.
Analytics, tracking and measurement integrity
- Verify GA4 (or equivalent) is firing correctly on all key templates, with no duplicate tag firing inflating sessions.
- Confirm conversion events (form submits, calls, e-commerce purchases) are configured as actual conversions, not just tracked as generic events with no value attached.
- Check Search Console property verification covers all relevant protocols/subdomains (http, https, www, non-www) so performance data isn't fragmented.
- Review UTM tagging consistency on paid and campaign links feeding into channel reports β broken or inconsistent tagging is one of the most common causes of misattributed traffic.
