Photographer & Studio Website Design

Photography studio websites live or die on image load speed and gallery UX. We build fast, lightbox-driven portfolio sites with package/pricing pages, shoot booking...

  • WordPress with a custom theme: good fit when the photographer wants to update galleries and blog posts themselves without touching code, and page builders like the block editor or Elementor are acceptable for content pages.
  • Headless CMS (e.g. Sanity or Contentful) with a Next.js front end: better when image performance and Core Web Vitals matter more than anything else, or when the studio needs a genuinely custom gallery interaction that off-the-shelf themes can't do.
  • Shopify or WooCommerce layer: added on top when the studio sells prints, digital downloads, or presets directly, rather than only booking shoots.

Why a Photographer's Website Is a Different Build Problem

A photography portfolio site has one job a typical business website doesn't: it has to display dozens or hundreds of large, high-resolution images without feeling slow, and it has to make those images look better than they would on Instagram or a stock template. That's a conflict - image quality versus page speed - and most "website builders for photographers" solve it badly, either compressing images until skin tones look muddy or leaving files unoptimized until a gallery page takes eight seconds to load on mobile. Everything else on the site (booking, pricing, contact) is secondary to getting that trade-off right.

We treat the photographer's website as a portfolio-delivery system first, and a lead-generation site second. Both have to work, but if the gallery experience is broken, nothing downstream - inquiries, bookings, package sales - happens at all.

What Actually Goes Into the Build

Image Pipeline and Gallery Engine

We don't just upload JPEGs to a CMS media library. We set up a proper image pipeline: responsive srcsets so a phone downloads a 600px image while a desktop gets the 1920px version, WebP/AVIF conversion with JPEG fallback, and lazy loading so only the images in or near the viewport load initially. For the gallery itself we typically build with masonry or justified-grid layouts (similar to what you'd see on a curated portfolio site rather than a generic 3-column grid), lightbox viewing with keyboard/swipe navigation, and optional watermarking for proof galleries.

Client Proofing and Private Galleries

Wedding and portrait photographers usually need a way to share a private, password-protected or link-gated gallery with a specific client for selection and download, separate from the public portfolio. We build this as a lightweight gallery module (custom-coded or via a headless CMS collection) rather than bolting on a third-party proofing SaaS, unless the studio already depends on one - in which case we integrate with what they use (Pixieset, ShootProof, etc.) instead of duplicating it.

Package and Pricing Pages

Most studios sell in tiers - engagement shoot, half-day wedding coverage, full-day with second shooter, add-on albums and prints. We structure these as comparison tables or tiered cards with clear inclusions/exclusions, because vague "contact for pricing" pages measurably reduce inquiries from couples and clients who are comparing several studios before they ever pick up the phone.

Booking and Inquiry Flow

Depending on the studio's workflow, this is either a simple inquiry form that routes to email/CRM with shoot-type and date-range fields, or a calendar-based booking system showing real availability (via Calendly-style embeds, a custom scheduler, or integration with studio management tools like TΓ‘ve or HoneyBook). We ask upfront which model fits: high-touch studios (weddings, commercial) usually want a qualifying inquiry form, not instant self-booking; high-volume studios (mini-sessions, headshots, product photography) usually want direct calendar booking.

Instagram and Social Proof Integration

Since Instagram is often where a photographer's actual portfolio lives and updates most frequently, we sync a live feed block into the site via the Instagram Graph API (not scraping, which breaks constantly) so the site never looks stale even between full portfolio updates. This sits alongside testimonials, press mentions, and "as featured on" sections where relevant.

Platform and Technical Choices

We pick the stack based on how much the studio will self-manage versus how custom the gallery/booking logic needs to be:

Whichever stack we use, we run every gallery page through Lighthouse and real-device testing before launch, because "it looks fine on my laptop with fiber internet" is not the same as how a potential client will experience it on a mid-range phone over 4G.

SEO Considerations Specific to Photography Sites

Photography SEO has its own quirks: image search traffic matters more than for most industries, so we write descriptive alt text and filenames tied to shoot type and location (e.g. "outdoor-wedding-portrait-golden-hour" rather than "IMG_4021"), structure image sitemaps, and use schema markup for local business and, where relevant, event/service listings. We also plan URL structure so individual shoot galleries or blog-style "session" posts can rank for long-tail searches like a specific venue name or shoot style, which is often how couples and clients actually search.

Who This Is For

This build fits wedding and event photographers, portrait and family studios, product/e-commerce photographers, commercial and real estate photographers, and multi-photographer studios that need a consistent brand across several portfolios. The scope differs by type: a wedding photographer needs strong proofing and inquiry qualification; a product photographer needs fast-loading galleries tied closely to client industries (e-commerce, catalogs) and possibly a client login area for bulk downloads.

Our Process

  1. Discovery: we review existing portfolio, current booking process, package structure, and where inquiries currently come from (referrals, Instagram, Google).
  2. Information architecture: deciding gallery categories, whether proofing needs a separate private area, and how packages are presented.
  3. Design: visual direction driven by the photographer's own work rather than a generic template - the site should look like an extension of their photography style, not a stock layout with their logo swapped in.
  4. Build: gallery engine, booking/inquiry flow, package pages, Instagram sync, blog/journal if needed.
  5. Performance and QA: image optimization audit, mobile testing, form/booking testing end-to-end.
  6. Launch and handover: training on how to upload new galleries, update packages, and manage inquiries, plus a support window for fixes.

Post-Launch Support

Photography sites need ongoing gallery uploads far more often than most business sites need content updates - a busy studio might add a new gallery every one to two weeks during peak season. We set studios up to do this themselves wherever the platform allows, and offer maintenance retainers covering plugin/CMS updates, backup management, and periodic performance re-checks as galleries accumulate and page weight grows over time.
